About the Sykes Verwey Centre
This clinic was established in 1963 offering over 55 years of Chiropractic care to Newton Abbot. Originally set up by Phil Sykes and then taken over by the highly skilled Frank Verwey who was also a chartered physiotherapist and doctor of Chiropractic.
We are proud to be the oldest established clinic in Newton Abbot. With the combination of Julia Verwey’s many years of experience and the fresh innovative ideas of Freddie Powell, the clinic is at the cutting edge of offering the latest in Chiropractic treatment.
The clinic has recently moved to our new modern purpose built clinic on the Brunel estate. Allowing for better access to public transport and the development of the clinic into a multidisciplinary practice under Freddie Powell.
We are proud to have gained an outstanding reputation in the local community, regularly receiving GP referrals with a large proportion of our patients coming through recommendations and word of mouth. We offer patient centred evidence based treatments in a caring and considerate manner at a reasonable price comparative to local clinics.
The clinic has seen thousands of patients in its 55 years practicing, with patients travelling from all over Devon due to our reputation for honest and ethical care.
The team today consists of Director Freddie Powell and Julia Verwey, we have 3 lovely receptionists Wendy, Mandy and Nicola who have been with us for many, many years.
The clinic itself has a warm and welcoming reception area, 4 purpose built treatment rooms, disabled access on the ground floor with easy access for those with mobility issues.
Outside the clinic you will find a free car park with 5 reserved spaces for patients.
If you would like to know more about the clinic itself and the services we provide or to speak with one of the Chiropractors directly we offer a call back service at no charge.
Freddie is from originally from Devon having grown up locally in Torbay. Since graduating in 2011 he worked in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire for 2 years before moving abroad to work in a multidisciplinary practice overseas. He then moved back to London where he worked at the Chiltern Health Centre a prestigious clinic in Surrey. He has also worked in the financial district in Canary Wharf and the City of London. He was very proud to have been contracted for Chiropractic services to Crystal Palace Football Club 1st team for 3 seasons between (2014-2017) forming part of the medical team at the New Beckenham training ground. Treating premiership players has a certain level of accountability and pressure to get fast results so he can draw on his Sports Chiropractic experience to get fast results.
Working in multiple clinics has given him invaluable experience of different styles of practice and treatment techniques working alongside podiatrists, medical doctors, physios, and sports therapists. Freddie is honoured to have taken over a family run practice with a 55-year history of Chiropractic care in the local community with an outstanding reputation. He endeavours to build on this reputation modernising and developing the clinic further to offer even better patient care for our local community.
Freddie graduated from the University of South Wales with a Master’s degree in Chiropractic and has pursued further interests in Sports Chiropractic with various post-graduate qualifications including the mandatory Sports Chiropractic Diploma necessary to work at Olympic Games and sports events. He is certified in dry needling, kinesio taping, and FAKTR certified. This involves using instrument assisted soft tissue work which he does use alongside his typical Chiropractic techniques. He has recently completed his Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilisation (DNS) exercise course from the renowned Prague rehabilitation centre to deliver the highest standard of core stability training to his patients. Having in 2019 completed Mcgill Method training 1, 2 and 3 he is now an advanced practitioner enabling him to offer you bespoke evidence based spinal rehabilitation programmes to prevent reoccurrence.
The days of Chiropractic care alone as a standard treatment are not in keeping with the most recent research on the management of back pain patients- and all practitioners should strive to do more which is the ethos the clinic embodies. Freddie will endeavour to combine all of this experience to allow for your full return to health.
He is registered with all the major insurance companies BUPA, AXA/PPP. He is a licentiate of the Royal College of Chiropractors, a member of the British Chiropractic Association (3178) and registered with the General Chiropractic Council (no.3574).
Please be confident that you will be in safe hands and thoroughly listened to for your initial consultation with Freddie Powell and an in depth consultation and thorough examination will take place. Please read some of the kind testimonials left by Freddie’s patients who love to share their positive experiences.
Freddie loves living in Devon with all that it entails, having taken over the day to day running of Sykes-Verwey Centre in 2018. It was over 15 years ago that Frank and Julia Verwey inspired Freddie to become a Chiropractor and he feels privileged to be able to work alongside Julia still and develop the practice further.
Julia graduated in 1983 from the world renowned AECC Chiropractic college in Bournemouth and as such has a wealth of experience having practiced for over 30 years. Julia followed in her parent’s footsteps with both Philip and Frances Sykes studying Chiropractic in America and then establishing the first Chiropractic clinic in Newton Abbot in 1963.
Julia has a very caring and gentle approach to Chiropractic, combined with a patient, upbeat and friendly manner. Greatly loved and appreciated by all her patients at the clinic she works on Tuesdays and Thursdays in clinic to see existing and new patients. Julia possesses excellent diagnostic and palpatory skills from her many years of hands on experience following a first visit to the clinic will be able to let the patient know if their problem is suitable for Chiropractic treatment. Julia has done extensive post graduate training, including kinesiology, activator methods and sacro occipital techniques from which she can draw upon to offer patient centred care.
Julia and her husband Frank Verwey took over the practice in ‘92 and the clinic continues to grow, incorporating physiotherapy and gaining an excellent reputation locally amongst GPs, allied health professionals and the community.
Julia greatest love is for her large family and otherwise enjoys keeping fit, struggling to learn the clarinet and travelling.
